Our charity funded Artlife project enhances the environment at our hospitals for patients, staff and visitors through art, crafts, music, drama and horticultural initiatives.

Artlife is managed by Dagmar Louw and Alison Burton. Dagmar is a clinical nurse specialist and Alison is a patient flow coordinator, they both work for the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and are local artists. They work with an Artlife Committee who are made up of dedicated volunteers and stakeholders who are all passionate about promoting art and creativity in our hospitals.

Funds are raised for the project through pieces of Art exhibited and sold in our new LIFE Gallery at Lister Hospital and through kind donations made by grateful patients, local businesses and groups.

There are huge benefits to having art in hospitals and clinical spaces.

  • Art can help reduce the length of stay in hospital and can reduce the need for medication
  • Art has proven to be therapeutic for those suffering from dementia in that it helps them recall memories and improve brain function
  • Art has been proven to improve staff morale and improve communication between people
  • Art improves the overall experience of the health and social care environment
  • Art eases stress, anxiety and depression in patients and care workers

Donations made to Artlife will help us fund:

The LIFE Gallery

Your kind donations will go towards maintaining our working art gallery in the pink zone in Lister Hospital. The LIFE gallery is a beautiful tranquil space within a busy hospital created for our community to display and exhibit art at a rate of £40 for four weeks per section. The gallery is an opportunity for artists to get their work in front of our thousands of visitors and sell their pieces with 20% commission being pumped back into our charity Artlife Project.

The gallery is a spacious place away from the wards, where our patients, staff and visitors can spend time in peaceful contemplation of the art on display.

If you are interested in exhibiting email [email protected] or for more information click here.

Artlife Corners and spaces

We want to display bespoke paintings and create our own beautiful art throughout our hospitals, whether it's in the corridors, in relative rooms, staff spaces or waiting areas.

Funds raised will help us fund the materials we need to create and install smaller art schemes across our four hospitals.

Artlife Gardens

Outdoor spaces are important for promoting health and well-being. We would like to design, install and maintain small garden areas around the Trust with the view of making outside spaces more accessible, attractive and enjoyable to patients, visitors and staff.

Artlife Events

We would like to arrange and promote social cultural events for staff to engage the workforce in a way that promote a healthy work life balance.

Therapeutic Art Activities

In support of our dementia, elderly and stroke units, we would like to organise therapeutic art lessons and activities for our patients.

Your donations will make a difference

  • A donation of £10 could fund brushes for the Artlife team
  • A donation of £50 could fund a therapeutic art lesson for a patient
  • A donation of £100 could fund a new painting in a staff room
  • A donation of £200 could fund refreshments for an Artlife event
  • A donation of £500 could fund materials to install a new mural in the corridor
  • A donation of £1000 could go towards funding a coordinator to manage Artlife
