We are raising funds to create a SafeSpace for all children and young people who arrive at the Lister due to their mental health

In the last two years, 20% of children and young people arriving at Lister’s Children’s Emergency Department came because of a mental health crisis; self-harm, overdose and suicidal thoughts just some of the many reasons.

Currently, if a young person presents with a form of mental health crisis, they use a room within the Adult Emergency Department, which can be a frightening and distressing experience. This room is also used by adults with a mental health crisis so can sometimes be unavailable.

By creating a SafeSpace for children and young people with complex needs, we are providing an environment which reduces stress and anxiety and promotes wellbeing and mindfulness.  Every young person will receive exceptional care at the Lister whether they arrive in cardiac arrest or with a mental health crisis.

SafeSpace consists of four parts:

1: SafeSpace room - The SafeSpace room will provide children and young people with a private and personal space which has been designed to meet their emotional and physical needs.

2: Teen corridor - By refurbishing the corridor to become young person friendly we can offer targeted health promotion, including age appropriate waiting time distractions such as reading materials and technology.

3: Mobile sensory unit - This machine is a portable sensory trolley, allowing our SafeSpace room to be turned into a child controlled sensory experience with light and touch to keep a young person calm and distracted.

4: Health promotion bags - The health promotion bags will contain leaflets on different services and organisations that are there to provide support, and when age appropriate, will include information on topics like sexual health.

The difference this project will make:

  • Create a SafeSpace for children and young people, particularly those who are feeling violent and angry or are sensitive to stressful environments
  • Provide sensory stimulation to help remove any negative thoughts, instead offering a calming and engaging environment
  • Ensure young people can access a range of age appropriate information surrounding their health and wellbeing
