A project funded by the East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity has today (Tuesday 2 June) received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The Butterfly Volunteer Service provides companionship for end-of-life patients and their families at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

Our specially-trained team of 30 volunteers work in conjunction with the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust’s Specialist Palliative Care team offering hundreds of hours of emotional support.

The initiative has won a string of awards since being established in 2016 and The Queen’s Award – seen as the MBE for volunteer groups – is now the icing on the cake.

Butterfly co-ordinator Angela Fenn said: “I am overjoyed to hear that our wonderful team of volunteers have won such a prestigious award.

“For me, the Butterfly volunteers are so deserving – giving their time and offering their incredible compassion to all those patients who are in their last hours or days of life at Lister Hospital.”
