Chesfield Downs Senior Section, led by this year’s Seniors Captain Stephen Cornell, have raised over £10,000 for the East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity in 2019.

Stephen chose the Hospitals’ Charity as his nominated charity after previously receiving treatment at the Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre, whilst his wife Pauline was treated at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. Many members of the Seniors Section have also received treatment across both sites.

2019 marked the Senior Sections 25th anniversary, with members donating money generously throughout the year. Stephen’s charity golf day in June was the highlight of the year raising over £8,000 on the day thanks to the support of 124 players taking part and the generosity of the day’s main sponsor Dermal Topical Innovation, along with a raffle and silent auction.

The funds raised have been split between the Lister in support of men’s health projects and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre where new chairs have recently been purchased for the outpatients’ department. The new seating has cushions designed to support patient’s posture and the stylish new colours help to provide an uplifting environment.

Talking about why the East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity were his nominated Charity, Stephen said:

“I received great care from everyone at the Lister Macmillan Cancer Centre whilst receiving treatment, and my wife Pauline also received fantastic care at Mount Vernon. However, the waiting room at Mount Vernon was a dark and depressing area, therefore by raising funds to install the new chairs I hope to improve the experience for others going though treatment. The support I have received from everyone at Chesfield Downs Golf Club, the Seniors Section and the wider community has been unbelievable.”
