We have opened the ‘Cura Garden Room’ at Lister Cancer Centre thanks to funding from Cura, a charity which supported people facing treatment for cancer.

Cura wound up its operations in 2023 and donated its remaining funds to us to create the room and also to provide grants to people who face financial hardship due to having cancer treatment.

The official opening ceremony was attended by Jennie Kirk and Richard Davies, the founders of Cura, staff from the centre as well as donors and fundraisers who have supported the centre.

Patricia Millward, matron and lead oncology nurse at the centre, helped to lead the project to create the room.

Patricia said: “The room is beautiful. It’s the perfect setting away from the clinic area for patients to relax in and enjoy the complementary therapies that we provide, thanks to funding from our hospital charity.

“Thank you so much to Jennie and Richard for funding the room. It will make such a difference to our patients who are going through the physical and emotional upset that comes with having cancer treatment.

“The room is a lovely, cosy space where patients will enjoy a bit of pampering and therapies such as massage and acupuncture which can help with the side effects of their treatment.

“We are always looking into ways we can make the experience better for our patients and this room will help them take a break from feeling like a patient and a bit more like themselves again.”

Eloise Huddleston, charity director, added: “We can't thank Cura enough for funding this beautiful room and for grants for people going through cancer treatment who need financial help. These things make such a difference to people going through a very difficult time.

“Thanks also to our brilliant team in the cancer centre who work with us to raise funds so they can make improvements to make things better for their patients."
