New SafeSpace for children’s emergency department A new ‘SafeSpace’ has officially opened for children who come into the emergency department in Lister Hospital in Stevenage in mental health crisis. Funded by kind donations, the space was officially opened by Justin Daniels, medical director and consultant paediatrician at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. With soft walls, an interactive floor, controllable lighting and a television, the room is designed to ensure children and young people in mental health crisis are kept safe and entertained to help them feel more relaxed in the busy hospital environment. Justin said: “I have looked after a number of children over the years in mental health crisis. It is such a difficult time for the child and for the family. “Having somewhere where that child and their family can go to calm down will make a massive difference to their care and the progress they will make in hospital, so I want to say a big thank you to everybody who has helped fund this amazing facility.” Jo Sinnott, health play specialist based at Lister Hospital, added: “This SafeSpace is for children who are in mental health crisis where they can feel more relaxed away from all the noise in our emergency department. “There are lights that the children can change to reflect their mood, an interactive floor and a TV with the streaming platforms to help them feel more at home. “We are so grateful to all the donors who made it possible for us to create this space. It will make such a difference to so many children going through a difficult time. Thank you.” Manage Cookie Preferences
