Steve Simper, who is registered blind and a former NHS divisional director, is preparing to take on this year's Lister Abseil.

After dedicating 40 years working in NHS leadership, Steve will swap operational meetings for safety harnesses as he abseils down the iconic 11-storey tower block in Stevenage.

Steve’s daughter, Natasha, who is herself a deputy divisional director at the hospital, will be watching alongside Steve’s faithful guide dog, Freeman.

Steve said: "I've spent decades managing hospital operations from behind a desk, so I thought it was about time I saw things from a different perspective – about 130 feet up, to be precise!

"The abseil is the start of my charity challenges. I’m planning a skydive next but Freeman has made it clear he's more of a ground support team member though!”

Eloise Huddleston, charity director said: “Steve is incredible for taking on the Lister Abseil to help support our hospitals. As a retired NHS director, he knows how hard our wonderful NHS staff work so we are very grateful he is raising funds to support them so they can continue to give the very best care to patients.

“I’m not sure how Steve’s guide dog, Freeman, will react to seeing Steve 130 feet up in the air but I’m sure he will be relieved when he's back on solid ground.

“The Lister Abseil is always a fantastic, memorable day for everyone taking part so if you are feeling brave, please sign up."
